The Soul Jazz Society is a group
of up and coming Toronto based
musicians who share a passion
for the soul jazz of the late 50s and
early 60s. Think Lee Morgan, Hank
Mobley, Jimmy Smith, Kenny
Burrell, and Jackie McLean and
anything on the Blue Note record
label.
Allison Toffan, Canada's brightest
tap dancing talent, has been
collaborating with Nathan Hiltz on
a project that fuses improvisation,
tap dance, and classic Canadian
folk songs by such artists as
Leanord Cohen, Joni Mitchell,
Bruce Cockburn, and Gordon
Lightfoot.
The Pilgrim's Progress was first
published in 1678 . It tells the story
of The Pilgrim's journey from the
'City of Destruction' to the 'Celestial
City'. This book is the inspiration
for a 50 minute Suite for Jazz Band
composed by Nathan Hiltz. It was
first performed on May 14, 2009 in
Walter Hall at the University of
Toronto.
'Dança do Riso' is a piece Nathan
Hiltz composed and orchestrated
for a 14 piece chamber ensemble
under the tutelage of
composer/bassist Andrew
Downing. that combines jazz
musicians and classical
musicians. Translated from
Portuguese it means 'Dance of
Laughter'
